My Hero’s Journey

An illustrated workbook for postgraduate design students

Team: Guy Collier, Cassie Khoo, Steve Reay, Ivana Nakarada-Kordic

My Hero's Journey is a workbook specifically designed to help students tell the story of their postgraduate research journey. Drawing inspiration from Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey narrative framework, the workbook leads students through a series of activities that encourage deep reflection on their initial inspiration, the challenges encountered throughout their journey, and the lessons learned from overcoming them. With a structure mirroring the Hero's Journey framework, the workbook directs students to integrate their personal narratives into a compelling and impactful discussion chapter.

My Role

As the first author and initiator of the project, I had the privilege of conceptualising and leading the workbook content, structure and exercises in close collaboration with designer and illustrator Cassie Khoo, with support from the wider team at Good Health Design. With my background in anthropology, I saw an opportunity to make Joseph Campell’s work practical and relevant for postgraduate students at AUT’s School of Art & Design. It was a labor of love fuelled by my passion for his work.

My Hero’s Journey is available at the Good Health Design Shop.
